The first stage of Road safety audit course for Kazakhstani road engineers was held last week

The first stage of road safety audit academic course has taken place in the period from 11 to 16 March 2014 at the "Dortranskom" training center. The representatives of the Committee of Roads Ministry of Transport and Communications of RoK, "Kazavtozhol" JSC, "Kazavtozhol" JSC branches in SKO and Kyzylorda region, "Kazakhavtodor", "KazDorNII" (Kazak Road Reserch Institue) JSC and Committee of Administrative Police of MIA RoK attended this workshop.

Presentation and course materials have been prepared by experts of «SweRoad» company and following experts on road safety audit presented them: 1. Hans- Joachim Vollpracht; 2. Lutz Pfeiffer; 3. Ralf Baumann.

An overview of the lectures were presented and the agenda of the workshop was discussed on the first course day, March 11.

On March 12 six presentations were presented to the atendants on the following topics:

1. Safer Design for Interurban Roads and Motorways - Alignment;

2. Safer Design for Interurban Roads and Motorways - Intersection;

3. Safer Design for Interurban Roads and Motorways - Service and Rest Areas;

4. Human Factors in Road Design and Operation;

5. Design principles of Urban Roads/Through road section;

6. Roundabout design.

March 13 participants attended lectures on the following topics:

1. Intersections with traffic signals;

2. Passive safety installations according to EU standards;

3. Bridge design and road safety issues;

4. Skid resistance issues;

5. The practical work on a Road Safety Audit report with Checklists Structure.

March 14 as per participants’ request the video of Sweden roads winter maintenance was shown and experts provided their ​​final presentations and a report on road safety audit of M32 road section.

During and after each abovementioned presentations there were discussions of the topics. Parties found similarities and differences under different subjects of discussion in the standards and laws of the both countries.

On March 15 works in groups were carried out, participants passed a test. Upon completion of the workshop all participants received certificates of training workshop on road safety audit and as homework received projects for implementation of independent safety audit.

PMC KazDorNII in association with Sapa SZ LLP has provided Sweroad all support and cooperation in successful carrying out of this training program.

The second stage of the workshop will be held in early April on M32 road section and will have practical character.

Reference: The Committee for Roads Ministry of Transportation and Communications of the Republic of Kazakhstan awarded the Contract to Swedish National Road Consulting AB (SWEROAD) on 31^st July 2013 to conduct the following under the Component 1 and 2:

- Component 1: Road Safety Audit of 1062km of road sections and review of Traffic Management at Road Works Republic of Kazakhstan: South-West Roads Project;

- Component 2: “Strategy for Development of Road User Services” and its Pilot Implementation.
