According to information from Motor Roads Committee, currently, 1,233 km of the Western Europe – Western China corridor is covered with construction. Before this year-end, the works will start on the other 384 km of Kazakhstan’s section of the international highway.
As the Committee Chairman Zamir Saginov noted, “the project implementation is on schedule. In the plan for this year, we set the goal to construct 806 km. To date, 377 km of the road, i.e. almost half, have been already laid. And for two previous years, 915 km were commissioned to operation”.
Saginov also informed that in July, starting the construction of 80 km Shymkent – border of Zhambyl region road is planned. To date, the contracts have been already signed with the contractors.
Furthermore, the assessment of bids is in progress for the Almaty – Khorgos section 304 km long, which is also planned to start in the nearest future. 47 companies participated in the bidding.
Note that to the project for reconstruction of Western Europe – Western China transport corridor, 3500 persons were mobilized, of which 579 are foreign professionals. In addition, 5 000 units of road construction machines are used, as well as 30 asphalt-concrete and 24 cement-concrete plants.
Reference: the length of the corridor across Kazakhstan’s territory is 2 787 kilometers, with 2 452 kilometers subject to reconstruction. In financing the project, the funds of 5 international financial institutions are involved, in addition to budget funds. Construction works on the highway are currently being performed by 17 general contractors and 45 domestic sub-contract entities.
