The length of "Almaty-Khorgos" road of "Western Europe - Western China" international transit corridor is 304 km. The road is constructed under technical category I with 4-lanes and cement concrete pavement.
Taking into account the traffic load on the existing road (Kuldzha tract), and lack of possibility to acquire land plots for the construction of roads in such towns as Guldana, Enbekshi, Baiterek, Avat, Baltabai, Aschysai and Taskensu, the design provides bypass of the settlements, and therefore 80% of road section will be constructed uner the new direction Almaty – Chilik - Charyn, which reduces the length of the route for 50 km and reduces the time for reaching the destination point.
Construction works on the section started in late 2013, involving the World Bank loan. The contract amount is 120 billion, of which 42,5 billion tenge disbursed up to day and it is planned to disburse 28.9 billion tenge this year.
Currently, work is being performed on 8 sections with the involvement of four General Contractors (JV "Dogus/Gulsan", JV "Todini/Kazakhdorstroy/ Impergilo", "Evrascon" and "OHL"). Works are performed by the joint venture "Dogus/Gulsan" on two sections, by joint venture "Todini/Kazahdorstroy/ Impergilo" on four sections, the construction of bridges and overpasses are being performed "Evrascon" and the bridge over the Ili river by "OHL". To date, works under construction of subgrade, subbase, base course and cement concrete pavement, construction of culverts and underpasses providing passage of special-purpose machinery are being carried out along the road.
3 thousand people, including 2.8 thousand people of local staff are involved in this project, and 1,195 units of road-building equipment, 10 cement plants and 8 crushing and screening plants have been mobilized.
Mainly materials of domestic production, which is over 90%, with the exception of metal structures of bridges and separate elements of furniture are used in the project.
Currently, 17.1 km cement concrete pavement, 28 km base and 3.9 million m3 subgrade, accounting for 75% of the total earthworks have been constructed under project.
In general, the works are being carried out in accordance with the approved work programs.
At the end of the year it is planned to open traffic on 150 km of cement concrete pavement in both directions.
