References: The developed network of transit routes has been established in Kazakhstan for three priority directions: 1) Russia – countries of Europe and Asia; 2) China, Japan and countries of South-Eastern Asia; 3) Countries of Central Asia, Transcaucasia, Black Sea, Persian Gulf and Turkey. 5 formed international transit corridors pass throughout the territory of the country in each of the shown directions: 1. Northern Corridor of TransAsian Railroad Mainline (TARM). Western Europe – China, Korea, Japan through Russia and Kazakhstan (section Dostyk – Astana - Petropavlovsk). 2. Southern Corridor of TARM. South-Eastern Europe – China and South-Eastern Asia through Turkey, Iran, countries of Central Asia and Kazakhstan (section Dostyk - Saryagash).3. Central (Central Asian) Corridor. Eastern Europe – South Caucasus – Caspian Sea – Central Asia (road section through RK Dostyk - Aktau).
Inside Kazakhstan these corridors are divided into 6 railroad and 6 road transit corridors. 4 international air corridors pass through airspace of Kazakhstan. In 2010 transit of cargo along transport corridors of the Republic of Kazakhstan accounted for 15 million tons, including by railroad transport – 14 million, by cr – 800 thousand tons, by water – 112 tons through port of Aktau. Transit air traffic - - 131 plane-kilometers. Overall profit from transit was about 900 million USD (864 million USD). Expected volumes of transit through the territory of Kazakhstan in 2015: - surface transport – up to 25 million tons; - transit traffic through airspace of the RK – up to 225 million plane-km.

The Head of Transport Department, regarding perspectives for the development of national transport system, dwelled on megaproject “Western Europe – Western China”. As he mentioned, large projects are implemented for improvement of technical condition and increase of road capacity of our surface international transit corridors. The idea of revival of Great Silk Way has been realized – megaproject, implemented on initiative of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, N.Nazarbayev, on establishment of transcontinental road corridor “Western Europe – Western China”, with the length of 8 445 km, implementation of which has been conducted since 2009. (Trough the territory of China – 3 425 km, Russia – 2 233 km).

References: The length of the corridor through the Republic of Kazakhstan is 2 thousand 787 km and passes through the territories of 5 regions. 2 thousand 452 km of the road have been subjected to reconstruction, including for I category - 1 391 km, II category - 1 061 km. Cost of the Project is 5.5 billion USD. At present, the work is executed at 34 road sections with the length of 1 thousand 715 km on the territory of 4 regions of the Republic. 750 km of a new road will be constructed in the current year.

Berik Kamaliev, Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Kazakhstan, mentioned that the road, crossing flat country, is the shortest way from China to Europe, with minimum number of countries-participants, well then the borders. Completion of the project will allow to reduce the period for freight supply from China to Europe by motor transport nearly 3.5 times (compared to seaway - 30-45 days) – up to 10 days. These competitive advantages make the project perspective. Putting into operation of the corridor will increase cargo traffic in the directions of China – Central Asia, China –Russia – Western Europe by 2015 in 1.5 times (up to 1.2 million tons). While implementation of the project new businesses have been established, tens of road-building companies of the country have been provided with job, more than 35 thousand road builders have been involved. In the perspective 50 thousand people will be involved in the project. Completion for construction of the corridor has been provided in 2013. Overall in 2015 we plan to complete reconstruction of all 6 international road corridors with total length of 8 thousand 415 km.
